One might think that traveling in these current times is a test of strength and reckless tenacity. One might surrender to the opposing currents of contradictory information, imagining oneself drifting through a Rimbaldian hell. And one might tell oneself that it's better to just wait for all this to pass — if it ever does — and resign oneself to gazing at dream destinations on a television screen. I could have told myself that. And yet I went to Ethiopia and came back. Happy, fulfilled. True, I had to comply with the health regulations in force upon my arrival at Addis Ababa airport, but in the end, that was more reassuring than constraining. And my first steps in this vibrant, lively city showed me just how much its people respect and understand the current health necessities. I won't recount my entire journey here — that would take too long. I will simply express my gratitude to the Monpays Tours team for their professionalism and creativity, for their knowledge and their poetry (yes, Rimbaud again!), and for their love of this fascinating country, which they know how to pass on to those willing to receive it — helped, I must admit, by the fact that as a solo traveler, I had the privilege of two enthusiastic and dedicated guides all to myself. So to all of you, I say... amesseguenalo!
What a lovely surprise! An astonishing country thanks to the variety of its landscapes, its traditions, and its cultural sites. A very well-balanced itinerary alternating treks and visits, supported by an impressive number of local partners. Overall management and crisis management (Coronavirus alert) were impeccable on the part of our guide, who worked tirelessly and smoothly to ensure the continuity of the itinerary and trouble-free returns. Thank you, Abush, for your efficiency and kindness. See you soon on the roads of the south of the country!
A few observations following our trip to Ethiopia from March 9 to 19. During our stay, we were satisfied with the various services provided: Our choice of hotels and restaurants met our expectations. Our guide, Daniel, speaks French very well; his commentary was very thorough, precise, and engaging. The minibus driver was very skilled and cautious. We were surprised by Ethiopia, both by the variety of its mountain landscapes and by astonishing sites such as Lake Tana, a true inland sea. Orthodox Christianity, with its multitude of churches, amazed us. We appreciated the efficiency of the Monpays Tours agency.
Experience Ethiopia's vibrant festivals and cultural celebrations
Discover Meskel, one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular and deeply spiritual national holidays, recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This ancient festival commemorates the 4th-century discovery of the True Cross by Empress Helena, beginning on the eve of Meskel with the assembly and lighting of the Demera—a massive, pyramid-shaped bonfire decorated with yellow Meskel daisies. In Addis Ababa, tens of thousands gather at the iconic Meskel Square to watch Orthodox Christian priests in ornate, colorful robes lead vibrant processions filled with rhythmic chanting, singing, and torch-lit celebrations. Across the country, communities gather to share traditional meals, making it a powerful time of unity, hospitality, and cultural renewal.
Experience Irreecha, the vibrant annual Thanksgiving festival of the Oromo people, marking the arrival of spring and the harvest season. Tens of thousands of celebrants gather in traditional white attire at the sacred waters of Hora Finfinnee in Addis Ababa and Hora Harsadi in Bishoftu to offer prayers of thanks, sing cultural songs, and present fresh green grass and flowers to Waaqayyo (God) for peace, health, and abundance. As one of East Africa's largest indigenous cultural gatherings, this stunning event offers a unique window into Oromo traditions, unity, and community harmony. Join the celebrations to experience a profound spirit of gratitude, colorful traditional dances, and the rich cultural tapestry of Ethiopia!
