About Afar Triangle / Danakil Depression

Welcome to the Afar region, a geological marvel and the absolute centerpiece of the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Known as the Danakil Depression, this destination is not just a place; it is another planet. You will walk on salt flats that stretch to the horizon, stare into the bubbling yellow-orange lava of the Erta Ale volcano—one of the few persistent lava lakes on Earth—and visit the neon-green acidic pools of Dallol, the hottest inhabited place on the planet. For Monpays Tours, Afar is where we send the brave: the adventurer who wants to stand where Lucy (our oldest ancestor) once walked, amidst camel caravans and nomadic warriors. Celebrating 20 years of exploration, we invite you to experience Ethiopia's most extreme landscape.

What Makes It Special

Witness the permanent lava lake at Erta Ale, glowing red against the night sky
Walk on the otherworldly sulfur springs of Dallol, a palette of neon greens, yellows, and oranges
Join the centuries-old salt caravan route to the Salt Flats of Lake Karum
Stand at the triple junction where the African, Arabian, and Somali tectonic plates are ripping apart
Camp under the most intense starry skies on Earth
