About Sof Omar Caves

Hidden in the southeastern highlands near the Bale Mountains lies one of Ethiopia's most extraordinary and under-visited natural wonders—the Sof Omar Caves. This is not just a cave; it is a 15-kilometer underground labyrinth carved by the Weyib River over millions of years. Named after the 13th-century Muslim saint Sof Omar, who once meditated here, the caves are both a geological masterpiece and a sacred pilgrimage site. Inside, you will walk through colossal chambers, under natural stone bridges, and past pillars that rise like cathedral columns. Sunlight streams through roof collapses, illuminating underground pools where the river still flows. At Monpays Tours, we bring you here with expert local guides who know every tunnel, chamber, and hidden passage. This is Ethiopia's best-kept secret—a place that rivals any cave system on earth. Celebrate 20 years with a journey into the heart of the earth.
