Timket Festival (Ethiopian Epiphany)
Witness Timket, Ethiopia’s most colorful and breathtaking spiritual festival, celebrated on January 19 to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this spectacular three-day celebration begins on the eve of Timket (Ketera), when holy replicas of the Ark of the Covenant (Tabots) are carried in grand processions from churches to sacred bodies of water. The main event features a glorious morning baptism ceremony led by Orthodox Christian priests dressed in ornate, shimmering robes. While celebrated with immense energy across the country, the imperial city of Gondar offers a legendary backdrop as crowds gather around Fasilides' Bath for the ultimate blessing. Immerse yourself in an electrifying atmosphere filled with sacred music, traditional dances, and divine unity!
