The Danakil Depression is not for everyone. Called the "cruelest place on Earth," it is one of the hottest, lowest, and most otherworldly places on the planet. But for the adventurous traveler, it is unforgettable. Here is everything you need to know to prepare for your Monpays Tours expedition to the Danakil Depression and Erta Ale volcano.

What Makes the Danakil So Extreme?

  • Temperature: Daytime highs regularly exceed 45°C (113°F). The average annual temperature is 34°C (93°F)—the highest on Earth for any inhabited place.

  • Altitude: The depression drops to 125 meters below sea level (410 feet), one of the lowest points on the continent.

  • Terrain: Salt flats, sulfur springs, active volcanoes, and lava fields.

  • Isolation: No phone signal, no Wi-Fi, and the nearest hospital is hours away.

What You Will See

  • Erta Ale (The Smoking Mountain): One of only five persistent lava lakes on Earth. You will hike at night (when it is cooler) and sleep on the crater rim, watching the red glow of boiling lava.

  • Dallol (The Yellow City): Hydrothermal fields of neon-green, yellow, and orange sulfur springs—like walking on another planet.

  • Lake Karum (Salt Flats): Vast white salt flats where Afar caravans have mined salt blocks by hand for centuries.

How to Prepare: Physical & Mental

1. Fitness Level
The night hike to Erta Ale is 2–3 hours over rough, rocky, and uneven terrain. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking on unstable ground in extreme heat (even at night, temperatures are 30–35°C / 86–95°F). The hike to Dallol is short and flat.

2. Health & Medical Considerations

  • Hydration is everything. You will drink 5–7 liters of water per day. Your Monpays Tours vehicle carries ample supplies.

  • Electrolytes. Bring electrolyte tablets or powder to add to your water. You will sweat constantly.

  • Heat exhaustion warning signs: Dizziness, nausea, headache, stopped sweating. Tell your guide immediately.

  • Existing conditions: If you have heart problems, respiratory issues, or are pregnant, consult your doctor before booking. The extreme heat and remote location are not suitable for everyone.

3. What to Pack

Essential (Do Not Forget):

  • Headlamp with extra batteries (the night hike is dark—no artificial light beyond what you bring)

  • Sturdy hiking boots (ankle support is essential on the rocky terrain around Erta Ale)

  • Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing (cotton or linen—avoid synthetics that trap heat)

  • Wide-brimmed hat with chin strap (the wind can be strong on the volcano rim)

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and lip balm with SPF

  • Refillable water bottle (at least 2 liters—you will refill from the vehicle)

  • Bandana or scarf (to cover your face from dust and sulfur fumes at Dallol)

Recommended:

  • Sleeping bag (it can be cold on the crater rim at night—yes, cold, despite the daytime heat)

  • Sleeping mat (the ground at the camp is hard)

  • Wet wipes (there are no showers—this is your "bath")

  • Power bank (charging is not available; conserve your phone for photos only)

  • Ziplock bags (to protect electronics from dust and sulfur residue at Dallol)

What Not to Bring:

  • Expensive jewelry or watches (the sulfur at Dallol can tarnish metals)

  • Drones (prohibited without special permits)

  • Unnecessary electronics (dust will get everywhere)

4. Accommodation on the Danakil Tour
There are no hotels. Accommodation is basic camping:

  • Erta Ale: Fixed dome tents on the crater rim (shared, no air conditioning, just a mat on the ground). You sleep to the sound of rumbling lava.

  • Hamed Ela (base camp): The "Salt Hotel" – concrete huts with air conditioning (a luxury here). This is where you will stay before and after Dallol.

5. Safety & Security

  • Armed escorts: For safety, all Danakil tours require an armed military or regional police escort. This is mandatory, not optional. Monpays Tours arranges this.

  • Travel insurance: Your insurance must cover extreme adventure activities, including active volcano visits and travel to remote regions (above 4,000 meters altitude and below sea level). Check your policy before booking.

  • Communication: Your Monpays Tours guide carries a satellite phone for emergencies.

6. What to Expect Emotionally
The Danakil is challenging. You will be hot, dusty, tired, and uncomfortable at times. But you will also stand at the edge of a boiling lava lake, walk on salt that was traded for gold in ancient Rome, and camp under stars so bright they feel close enough to touch. It is not a luxury vacation. It is an adventure. And our guests tell us it is the best thing they have ever done.

Sample 3-Day Danakil Itinerary

  • Day 1: Mekele → Hamed Ela (drive through desert, visit salt flats and camel caravans, overnight at Salt Hotel)

  • Day 2: Hamed Ela → Dallol (morning visit to sulfur springs) → Erta Ale (afternoon drive, night hike to volcano, overnight on crater rim)

  • Day 3: Erta Ale → Mekele (sunrise descent, drive back, afternoon flight to Addis)

Is the Danakil Right for You?
Take this quick quiz:

  • Can you hike 3 hours on rough terrain in 30°C heat at night? ✅

  • Can you sleep on a mat on the ground with no air conditioning? ✅

  • Do you have any heart or respiratory conditions? ❌ (Consult your doctor)

  • Are you looking for luxury accommodations? ❌ (This is not for you)
