Climbing Ethiopia's Cliff-Hanging Churches & The Frescoes of Abuna Yemata Guh
Welcome to the Gheralta Massif, a dramatic landscape of towering sandstone peaks in the Tigray region. Here, between the 5th and 15th centuries, early Christian monks carved churches into the cliff faces—not by building stairs, but by climbing barefoot up the rock. The most famous is Abuna Yemata Guh, a church perched 2,500 feet above the valley floor, accessible only by climbing a 19-foot rock wall with sheer drops on either side. Inside, you will find 1,600-year-old frescoes still vibrant in color. Others are easier to reach but no less spectacular: Mariam Korkor (with its twelve free-standing pillars), Daniel Korkor (with panoramic views), and Debre Tsion (hidden in a cave). At Monpays Tours, we bring you to climb, crawl, and pray in these sacred spaces. Celebrate 20 years with a journey that tests your body and lifts your spirit.
